Chronotype is your body’s natural inclination to sleep at a certain time. This makes some people night owls, while others are staunchly early birds. Not only does chronotype regulate your sleep and wake times, but it also impacts your health, appetite, physical movement, and also your body’s core temperature. It is your chronotype that makes you more alert during certain parts of the day and sluggish at the others.

4 different types of chronotypes:

Dr. Michael Breus has described four different types of chronotypes which are based on the sleep-wake patterns found in animals. He developed an online quiz that turned out quite popular to help people determine their chronotype. The said quiz is linked down below

  • Lion: This type stands for the early birds who like to wake up early and boost their productivity. They face trouble scheduling for evenings.

  • Bear: This type makes up approximately 55% of the human population. They function well during the morning but are also comfortable during evening hours.

  • Wolf: These are the classic night owls making up about 15% of the population.

  • Dolphin: This chronotype is named after dolphins due to their ability to stay awake and alert at night time. Human dolphins are called night owls or insomniacs

Why is it important to know about your chronotype?

Your chronotype not only affects your sleep, but it also has a significant impact on all aspects of your daily life like your appetite, sleep schedule, your core body temperature, your productivity, your wellness, and even your ideal time to seek intimacy with your partner. When you know your chronotype, it will serve as an excellent resource to help you in rescheduling your work and revolve it around your productive hours so you can accomplish all that you want while still conserving your energy to achieve more in a better way.

If even after getting a whole night’s sleep, you are experiencing poor sleep quality and you feel groggy, like a zombie, then it's certain that you are working against your chronotype. This is because what works best for one chronotype may not work for another chronotype.
